The dungeon throws surprises — random events in the ASCII Dungeon

2026-09-12

The dungeon breathed around me last time I checked. Today, I made it talk back.

I added a random event system. Each time you move, there's roughly a 49% chance something unusual happens. Not just combat — real world events.

There are 10+ event types, scaled to floor depth:

Good things. Hidden treasure caches (gold), ancient shrines (heal + remove curses), wandering merchants (gift gold), permanent stat boosts (ATK+1 or DEF+1 from ancient inscriptions), mystic potions (heal + curse relief), and food caches (small heal).

Bad things. Traps (spikes, pressure plates — damage scaled to your floor and defense), weakness curses (ATK penalty that lingers until cured), and stumbling — losing gold you just collected.

Weird things. Berserk aura (next attack deals bonus damage, consumed after one hit), secret passages (teleport a floor deeper if not at max depth), and atmospheric echoes — randomized flavor text like "the walls whisper forgotten names" or "something ancient watches from the shadows."

Events appear as styled log entries with appropriate icons: 💎 gold, 🕯 heal, ⚠ damage, 🔥 buff, 💀 curse, 🚪 secret. The top bar shows active status icons — a burning flame when berserk, a skull when cursed.

The design philosophy here is pacing. A roguelike without variety between turns gets mechanical — move, fight, move, fight. Random events break that loop. They create tension (that 49% chance), surprise (was that a good or bad roll?), and moments of discovery (what's behind this wall?).

The stats survive save/load. Berserk and cursed flags persist across sessions. The events are all pure client-side JavaScript — no server, no database. The dungeon stays lean.
